According to Norse mythology, the hammer, also called Mjölnir, was forged by dwarves so that Thor could use it to fight the giants, who are a symbol of the destructive forces of nature. In this way, Thor ensured order in nature and maintained balance. Many people worshipped him for this. When Mjölnir is thrown, it is said, he never misses his target. It always returns to Thor's hand, for it can only be wielded by him. The hammer, Mjölnir, is the symbol for him and is therefore still worn today as an amulet.
